FLAS Fellowships from the EUC
FLAS Fellowships are administered by the University of Illinois National Resource Centers and are awarded competitively through an annual competition. Students from all departments and professional schools are encouraged to apply.
EUC FLAS graduate student fellowships may be used for the study of Arabic, Bosnian-Serbian-Croatian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, French,
German, Greek (modern), Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish,
Swedish, or Turkish.
Priority will be given to less-commonly-taught
languages (LCTLs) and
higher-level language study*.
EUC FLAS undergraduate fellowships are not available for Spanish, French, or German. Undergraduate fellowships are only available for intermediate to advanced study of less commonly taught European languages (LCTLs)*.
* LCTLs are defined as any modern foreign language other than Spanish, German, or French.
FLAS Academic Year 2013–2014
EUC has academic-year FLAS fellowships to award for 2013-2014 to qualified University of Illinois graduate and undergraduate students.
- Graduate students: may receive full tuition and fee waiver and a stipend of $15,000 payable over the academic year. Eligibility for tuition waiver varies by home department and school.
- Undergraduate students: receive $10,000 towards tuition and fees to study at the University of Illinois and a stipend of $5,000.
FLAS Summer 2013
Graduate and undergraduate students: The awards carry a stipend of $2,500 plus tuition and fees of $5,000 to study a language. Students desiring to study overseas are advised to read the FLAS FAQ, and confer with the EUC FLAS coordinator Sebnem Ozkan (asozkan@illinois.edu) early in the planning process.
Students planning to study abroad during the summer must also fill out a separate application with the Study Abroad Office. FLAS Fellowship Info Sessions for Students (Graduate & Undergraduate)
The workshops will feature information on FLAS Fellowships with presentations by the Area and International Centers FLAS coordinators. In addition to a general overview of FLAS fellowships and particular requirements for various Area Centers, you can get tips on how to write a successful application; what supporting documents you need; and who is appropriate for a recommendation.

FLAS Fellowship Info Session for U of I Departments
Graduate student FLAS (Foreign Languages and Area Studies) applications are submitted by the student’s department. This info session is targeted for departmental staff (primarily but not exclusively for Directors of Graduate Studies) who will be handling graduate student FLAS applications in their departments. We will review the departmental instructions, requirements and guidelines for submitting applications for Graduate Student FLAS Fellowships. You will also get a chance to meet the FLAS Fellowship coordinators and ask questions about the application process and the FLAS fellowships.

To Apply
All students must apply using a standardized application (available on-line through FLAS Website). Incoming students should contact their admitting department for instructions to access the on-line application form. Please read carefully the requirements for eligibility , graduate and undergraduate instructions, and peruse the FLAS FAQ make sure you have gathered all the information you need before beginning the online application.
Once you begin the application you must complete and submit it in one session. You will not be able to save your work or start over.You can view the sample on-line application for GRADUATE STUDENTS and the sample on-line application for UNDERGRADUATE students.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
• Applicants are judged on their record of academic achievement.
• Demonstrated and proposed commitment to EU language and area studies.
• Statement of purpose: Essays should
describe how the proposed language study fits in with your thesis, dissertation research project or degree program and relates to EU Studies as a field of study; how you intend to use the language; and how the language and area
study will contribute to your ultimate career goals. Please also
describe your previous language learning experiences (formal and
informal).
• Recommendation letters
In the 1-2 -page, single-spaced statement of purpose for the proposed study program, describe how the study of your chosen language contributes to your goals in graduate studies and in your career.
FLAS APPLICATION SUBMISSION:
• Graduate students: Submit your application (supporting documents) to your home department (check with your home department for its internal deadline).
FLAS applications must be submitted to EUC by YOUR home department by 5 PM on February 8, 2013. Departmental staff should check Instructions for Departmental Staff.
• Undergraduate students: Apply directly to the European Union Center. You MUST submit your application by 5 PM on February 8, 2013.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 5:00 PM Friday, February 8, 2013
Graduate students, check your home department deadline. Graduate students must submit their applications (supporting documents) to their home
departments. Deadline varies by department, during January and February
2013. FLAS graduate student applications must be submitted to EUC by YOUR home
department by 5 PM on February 8, 2013.
