Watch the State of the EU Address, delivered by João Vale de Almeida, Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to the United States.

Ambassador Vale de Almeida presented his credentials to President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony on August 10, 2010. Prior to his appointment in Washington, he served as the Director General for External Relations at the European Commission, the European Union’s executive body. As the most senior official under the authority of the High Representative/European Commission Vice-President Baroness Ashton, he helped formulate and execute the EU's foreign policy and played a key role in preparing for the new European External Action Service (EEAS) introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon.

Requesting abstracts
for the Bologna Reform and Beyond: Globalizing Education in the 21st Century conference.

The goal of this conference is to generate dialogue about the global and transnational implications of the fundamental principles laid down in the Bologna Declaration of 1999, and the new European guidelines and standards on higher education. Abstracts of 150 words or less may be submitted to Margaret Fitzpatrick (fitzpa11@illinois.edu)  and Gabriela Walker (gwalker4@illinois.edu) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, by June 1, 2012. Accepted papers may also be considered for publication in a designated issue of the new Journal of Global Studies in Education.

This year’s EU Center Photo Contest theme is “Crossing the Atlantic: Ideas, Images, People.” Your photos may depict Europe’s presence in the United States, or the U.S.’s presence in Europe. The winning photos will be displayed at the University of Illinois EU Center's annual European Union Day on March 29, 2012 and on the EU Center website.
