The central mission of the EUC is education. To achieve this goal the Center has created a graduate minor in European Union Studies and a core interdisciplinary graduate seminar that brings together students and faculty from across the campus in agriculture, business, economics, engineering, law, political science, and so on. In order to explore the complex problems facing the European Union and the United States, many graduate programs on campus incorporate the Center's interdisciplinary seminars as electives in their degree program.
EU Center faculty also teach courses in their disciplines at the graduate and undergraduate levels that address European topics. The Center has developed a concentration in European Studies for undergraduate students in the International Studies major and minor program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Several Area Studies Clusters have been developed which include language, cultural, disciplinary and professional courses around particular topics, as well as supporting study abroad programs. These clusters are intended to help undergraduates in majors such as International Studies, self-designed majors, or students who wish to add a minor in EU-related subjects.
Programs in the EU offered through the Study Abroad Office at the University of Illinois and through other institutions enable students and faculty to study in Europe and earn course credit or advance their careers. Programs range from week-long to year-long commitments. The EU Center has compiled a list of additional study abroad programs in the EU, and European Union-related internships to assist students who wish to explore other options.
